Anechoic Wind Tunnel
The Faculty of Aerospace Engineering at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology is building a new subsonic low-noise closed-return anechoic wind tunnel facility. The facility is designed to have dual use as full anechoic chamber (AC) and as closed-return anechoic wind tunnel (AWT). The AWT is designed for low-speed (subsonic) aerodynamic and aeroacoustic studies in the flow speed range of 10–70 m/s with a turbulence level less than 0.05%. The AC is designed in a manner that allows sealing of all the apertures for conversion to a fully anechoic chamber maintaining or exceeding the frequency cut-off of 150 Hz and background noise level of 15 dB at the free-field range.

Neev-Ya Prize
Asst. Prof. Oksana Stalnov, Tuvia Kogan, Michael Faran, Hadar Ben-Gida, for their paper entitled “Noise Reduction of a UAV Propeller Using Grit-Type Boundary Layer Tripping” at the 57th Israel Annual Conference on Aerospace Sciences (IACAS) .
The “Neev-Ya Prize” is awarded by Rachel & Prof. David Durban in memory of their son, Neev-Ya Durban, who was a graduate of the Aerospace Engineering Faculty at the Technion and an officer in the Israeli Air Force’s Aeronautical Design Process Branch.

In 2016 we organized a workshop on ‘Serration Technology on Airfoil: Unsteady Aerodynamic and Aeroacoustics’ at Lorentz Center, Leiden, the Netherlands.
Noise emitted from wings and turbine blades is a major issue in a number of strategically important sectors in Europe, including environment, energy and transport. It poses a significant obstacle for the further expansion of an airport traffic and the deployment of on-shore wind farms. In the current climate where the environmental awareness and regulation are becoming more stringent, technological advancement should not only focus on achieving the most superior aerodynamic performance, but should also ensure that the blades can be operated quietly.
